There is a chronic shortage of suitable homes for people with a disability in Australia. You can help do something about it.

You know the feeling. You put the key in the front door. You take a deep breath. And relax. You’re home.

This is the place where you’re most comfortable. Where you feel safe. Giving and sharing this feeling with people with disability is not only possible but also profoundly life-changing.

But how can such a space so life-changing for people with disability?  Each house that you and the wider community helps build can deliver...

Safety

This can be safety based on access to support during times of high stress or physical need, or; it could be safety due to the home being designed and built to ensure they can move about and function as best they can each day, or; it is a safe space because they, living with others with similar needs and interest, are more connected with a community that cares. In other words, when we place a person with disability in a suitable home they can call their own, they can thrive, physically and emotionally, knowing they are safe and supported.

Help us provide safety to our community

Comfort

What makes a house a home isthose small details both in terms of look and function that make it a place where you can rest and relax in your own way each day. This is why new accessible homes are not just matched to the specific needs of people with disability, making them accessible and functional, but they're also aligned to their personal tastes - with everything from wall colours and furnishings through to plants being chosen by the residents themselves.

Give the gift of comfort to people with disability

Community

A home is also one that allows you to connect to the community, how and when you want. This means the home is in an area that puts the wider community in reach and ensures that you can readily connect with your own personal community, whether it's family, friends, or support services. Every person with disability we house is connected with a home that makes this connection to the community possible, day in and day out.

Give the gift of community.

Meet Eddie

The proof of what this safety, comfort, and community can do for a person with disability is our friend Eddie.

61-year-old Eddie has cerebral palsy and he’s unable to speak, so he communicates in his own way—mainly by writing on his iPad. He also has an intellectual disability, which means that he needs extra support with everyday things, like cooking and paying the bills. Until recently, he had never experienced that feeling of safety and comfort. He used to dread coming home at the end of each day.

“I was deeply concerned about what Eddie had gone through,” Rowena, his Support Manager, said, “so I made enquiries. It turned out he had been living in unsuitable accommodation. His housemate was highly volatileEddie had been suffering from extreme bullying in his own home.

With help from generous supporters like you, Eddie is now safe, happy, and comfortable in a suitable home matched to his needs, where he can connect with the community and support he needs to live his best life. You can see it in his smiling eyes and endless cheer.

But many others with disability find themselves have yet to experience this change. They are living in accommodation where they don’t even feel safe, never mind comfortable—and they can’t escape.  Right now, there is a severe shortage of suitable housing. When people like Eddie can’t find the right home, they can quickly become isolated, and their health and wellbeing can deteriorate quickly.

This is where you and others like you can continue to help.

We believe people with a disability in Australia have the same right to the safety and comfort of having a permanent roof over their head as anyone else.

That’s why we’re determined to ease the housing shortage. But we can only do this with your help. Your generosity today can help build a further 15 specialist new homes over the next 12 months.
