How One Sit Up Turned into Thousands, and a Community Stepped Up to the Challenge

When Community Believes, Anything is Possible

In a world that can often feel heavy with uncertainty, this experience was a powerful reminder that kindness, generosity and community spirit are very much alive.

As part of the Sit-Up Challenge for Endeavour Foundation’s 75‑year celebration, I witnessed something incredibly special. What started as a simple idea quickly became a shared community moment, and a clear reminder that when people believe in a cause, amazing things can happen.

The Idea: Turning the Sit-Up Challenge into a Community Moment

Fundraising doesn’t always begin with certainty. Sometimes it begins with a simple question:  What if we tried something different?

With the support of Springfield United Football Club (SUFC), the local soccer club my son attends, my colleague Crystal Sacoto, Fundraising Specialist and I brought the Sit‑Up Challenge to the Springfield MiniRoos Soccer Carnival, an annual event run by the club, involving children aged under 6 through to under 12 and their families.

The club generously provided space on the fields for our big green Ford Everest and a 3m x 3m marquee, giving us a visible “home base” for the weekend.

When Everyone Gets Involved, Momentum Builds

Across the weekend, kids, teams, siblings, and plenty of parents, jumped in enthusiastically. The energy was contagious, the encouragement constant, and the sense of togetherness unmistakable.

Not only did the community rise to the challenge — they smashed it, completing an incredible 10,100 sit‑ups together.

This wasn’t just about fundraising. It was about connection. When people feel invited into a shared purpose, they show up in remarkable ways.

Generosity Beyond the Sit Ups

The generosity didn’t stop there.

In the lead up the event, I had reached out to local businesses who rallied behind the weekend, donating raffle prizes and support, including

  • Merlo Coffee hampers
  • Epic Hair Designs gift pack and voucher
  • Visa gift cards from Elevate Electric & Air and Little Guy Pest Control
  • Rebel Sport voucher thanks to Timothy Malysiak from Aussie
  • Tickets to see Urzila Carlson, generously provided by the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre

This support came from simply asking — inviting local businesses to be part of the community effort in whatever way they could.

The Impact: Turning Effort into Real Support

Through raffle sales and donations across the weekend, the community helped raise $1,404 for Endeavour Foundation, a powerful outcome made possible through collaboration, creativity and commitment.

Why This Matters

This experience is proof that meaningful impact doesn’t require grand gestures. Sometimes it comes from thinking differently, inviting others in, and trusting that community will respond.

To everyone who completed a sit‑up, bought a raffle ticket, donated, cheered us on or simply stopped to chat — thank you. Together, you demonstrated what’s possible when belief turns into action.

Ready to Try Something Similar?

If this story has inspired you, there’s still time to get involved. Think about your local sports club, gym, school or community group. A shared challenge, a simple activity, a few donated prizes — it all adds up.

It starts with the ask. Don’t be afraid to ask.
