Stefan Farina’s First Solo Exhibition at QArt Kew: An Iconic Melbourne Story

23 Apr 2026

QArt Studio in Kew recently celebrated another major milestone with Stefan Farina’s first solo exhibition, a vibrant showcase that marked an important moment in the artist’s creative journey. Bringing together distinctive works inspired by Melbourne’s most recognisable locations, the exhibition highlighted both Stefan’s growing technical skill and his increasingly confident artistic voice.

Stefan’s practice is deeply personal and rooted in observation. Each artwork on display was developed from his own photographic references, captured during weekend walks through the city. These moments of quiet documentation have been transformed into bold, expressive paintings that reflect his unique way of seeing Melbourne, familiar, yet re‑imagined through his unmistakable style.

Stefan said of his weekend walks around Melbourne: “I like photographing train stations and the fountain at the Exhibition Centre. I love the detail and perspective at the stations.”

A defining feature of the exhibition was Stefan’s strong use of black and white backgrounds, punctuated by striking pops of colour in the foreground. This contrast created a powerful visual rhythm across the collection, drawing viewers into each scene and allowing key architectural and cultural details to stand out. At the heart of the show was a large‑scale Melbourne city scene, which Stefan identified as his favourite piece. The work was particularly significant, as it was completed entirely independently, representing a personal breakthrough in both scale and confidence.

The exhibition opening included a thoughtfully curated Q&A session led by Gallery Supervisor Emilia Storm, who spoke with Stefan about his inspirations, creative process, and connection to Melbourne. The conversation offered valuable insight into how his work has evolved and how city life continues to influence his approach to composition and storytelling.

Gordon Hayward, Studio Supervisor, also reflected on Stefan’s artistic development, noting his increasing maturity, focus, and sense of personal style.

"Over time, Stefan has become more centred and assured, not only in the studio, but also in how he speaks about his work and advocates for QArt."

His growing confidence was evident throughout the event, resonating strongly with visitors.

The opening day was well attended with guests including Stefan’s parents, extended family, siblings, friends, and supporters, creating a warm and celebratory atmosphere. This strong community presence mirrored the success of the exhibition itself, with the event resulting in numerous artwork sales on the day — a testament to the strong connection audiences felt with his work.

Adding another personal touch, Stefan chose to wear a special outfit for the opening. He had recently purchased it during a trip to Italy with his mother, underscoring the importance of family and shared experiences in his life and career.

Looking ahead, Stefan’s momentum continues to build. His next solo exhibition is scheduled for November this year at one of Melbourne’s most iconic Italian institutions, Mario’s Café on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. He is currently working on a new collection of paintings, once again centred on iconic Melbourne scenes, promising to further expand and refine his distinctive visual language.

Stefan shared; “I’m really excited about my next exhibition at Mario’s, it’s a completely different environment for me, it is in an Italian restaurant and I am Italian as well.”

Stefan Farina’s QArt Kew solo exhibition was not only a celebration of artistic achievement, but also a powerful reflection of growth, independence, and creative confidence, an exciting chapter that signals even more to come.
