Where to visit in Australia when on an Outback road trip

Did you know that, at 7,692,024 km2, Australia is the planet's sixth largest country after Russia, Canada, China, the USA, and Brazil? That makes answering the question of where to visit in Australia, when on a road trip or any other holiday, a big ask.

This wide brown land has so many spots, hidden and well known, for you to discover. And as it turns out, with more than 120,000 km of travel, crisscrossing the country, we might know a thing or two about where you could or should go.

Just in the last few years, we’ve ticked off must-see spots that are too good for words. No joke, the places we have visited have to be seen to be believed. Our stops have included absolute musts for anyone looking to really explore Australia, especially if you're doing it as a road trip. 

From Uluru and the Alice through to the Gulf, our time spent going, here, there and everywhere, has allowed us to connect with amazing communities and experience the best Australia has to offer.

Oh, and did we tell you that we’re not stopping? The time on the road, seeing Australia is going to keep on keeping on – ticking off more experiences and locations with every KM driven. In 2021, we're heading out to the Simpson Desert (one of 4x4 Australia's essential desert trips).

Imagine being somewhere so far away from the rat race of city life that there’s no light or sound other than what’s coming from you and your own campsite. Then imagine what it’s like to see every last far off star out night – this is what you get when camping over night at this iconic spot.

When you throw in that your route in to this spot one that few others could access, both the journey and destination are a must-do and see.

birdsville

Home of the one and only Birdsville Races and one of the finest Outback pubs you’ll ever come across, this small town is a must for anyone looking to experience true “Australiana”. From one end of town the next (which isn’t all that far), you’ll get a feel for what it’s like to make a life in the Outback, well away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

Not far from Birdsville is a dune like no other, one that looks like nature purpose-built it to challenge drivers and adventurers alike. When you make it to the top (with a bit of effort and maybe some help), you’ll be treated to views that will make your jaw drop.
